Next’s Best Things

It’s easy to see why the “Most Improved Retailer” accolade in the Company Magazine Fashion Awards 2010 went to Next. And it’s even easier to forget the famous Next sale when its latest range of Tall items are so tempting.

Here are a few of my hot picks from the Spring/ Summer collection. International delivery details available here.

Signature Cream Drape Belted Dress, £40

Khaki Quilted Jacket, £50

Black Soft Jacket, £38

Black Ditsy Print Dress, £30

Twist Front Maxi Detail Dress, £35

Stripe Belted Knit Dress, £22

Inflate your Ego

What is this we see here All the Tall Things? A return to practicality?

You may have kissed goodbye to the puffa jacket after the Naf Naf trend of the early 90s, but prepare to work the Michelin Man look once more. Not only is it easy-to-wear and easy-to-clean, but this is actually a coat that does what it’s supposed to… it keeps you warm. How novel.

Tall Black Padded Jacket, Dorothy Perkins £45

Resurrected in 2010/11 for a number of shows including Giambattista Valli and Aquascutum, the new puffa is a little more grown up, with longer hemlines creating a more feminine silhouette. It’s Blake Lively’s cover-up of choice when resting between takes on the Gossip Girl set.

Dorothy Perkins has a very un-scary black version in its tall range; ideal for that muddy Boxing Day walk or watching the kids play footy.

Cash per Inch

It’s official. As a tall woman, the workplace is your oyster. Research shows that tall women receive larger salaries, higher status and greater respect. A study conducted in April this year by Long Tall Sally found that those who stand at 5ft8” and above are twice as likely to earn more than £30,000 a year than their shorter colleagues. Wahey.

Arianne Cohen, author of The Tall Book: A Celebration Of Life From On High, says, “Not only do [tall people] earn more but they’re more likely to be in leadership positions. As taller people have a downward eyecast when speaking to shorter colleagues, they are instinctively perceived to have authority and confidence.”

So to celebrate these rather positive findings, and help you whiz even faster up the career ladder (because us tall girls can climb two rungs at a time, surely?), I’ve searched the net for the best long-length workwear. Christina Hendricks eat your heart out.

Tall structured dress, £22

Tall belted seam pencil skirt, Topshop £36

Tall Black and white tweed jacket, Next £65

Tall black hareem trousers, Topshop £38

Tall mottle tuck shift, Topshop £50

Xanthia Jacket, Long Tall Sally £60

Cape Town

Tall Ultimate Jersey Cape Coat, Topshop £85

If you want to be a fashion superhero this season, then you’d better start rocking a cape. It’s the cover-up of choice for celebrities and fashion editors alike, and Topshop has a beautiful jersey version in its Tall range. A little bit military and a lot gorgeous, this is long and baggy enough to throw over all your winter layers but also very easy to wear – so you can still carry your statement Mulberry Alexa on your arm (à la cape crusader Fearne Cotton).

Going Dotty for Perks

Dorothy Perkins is currently offering a purse-pleasing 30% off everything online and instore — a great opportunity to pick up some Tall range items at a discount.

My faves are this slouchy boyfriend style knit and cute military jacket. Offer is for “A limited time only” — whatever that means — so snap them up quick!

Tall Tan Boyfriend Cardigan, was £32, now £22.40

Tall Khaki Military Coat, was £60.00, now £42.00

Alexa Chung’s Leopard Print Coat

Tall Leopard Vintage Fur Coat, Topshop £98

Faux fur is huge this season thanks to Karl Lagerfield, who used reams of the stuff in his autumn/winter show for Chanel. This week Alexa Chung channelled kooky vintage chic in a brilliant brash leopard print cover-up (who knew that Pat Butcher would become such a style icon?) and thankfully I’ve spied a gorgeously similar version in the Tall range at good old Topshop.

Although do take note! I tried on this divine Topshop number to discover that the sleeves — as with Alexa’s – are designed to be ¾ length (Utterly impractical but oh-so-chic). So if you are braving the cold blizzards and not just posing for paparazzi, then layer up with a long-sleeved cardi or super long leather gloves.

A vision in Camel

Tall Batwing Oversized Coat - Topshop £110

Vogue writer Sarah Harris says “If you buy only one coat this season make it camel.”

But with most Tall ranges proving rather trend-averse, this is a shade that could easily sink from sophisticated classic to drab and mumsy. Thank heavens for Topshop then, which has created the most to-die-for Batwing coat that has all the slouchy sumptousness of the dressing gown styles we’ve been seeing from Chloe, Aquascutum and MaxMara. And since it’s the ONLY coat you’ll need this season, the £110 price tag isn’t too bad either.
